Note: I’m sorry. Next chapter we get to some even juicier drama (and some NSFW)!
Word Count: 1,171
Summary: It’s been 3 years since Drake and Emma got married, 2 since they found out she was infertile. How has treatment and the fake marriage affected them and their relationship after so long?
Chapter 29 Part 2: Better Life - P!NK
I've been up late watching you breathe Wondering if you're going to leave Don't tell me what you see That you actually believe it
But I've been up late nights Staring at the street lights All the cigarette smoke, can't escape a closing window And my head's like "what happened to you, it's alright" Baby, it's not alright What if we're a closing window
But I can't shake the feeling That you picture a better life, better wife, better nights, better high I can't shake the feeling (I can't shake the feeling) Do you picture a better life?
*** 2 years later ***
Emma was laying with her back to Drake, wide awake. More and more events had been calling Emma away for Royal duties and she could tell there was a rift growing between them. She had been through six rounds of IVF and they had all been unsuccessful, it was taking a toll on them. Last week had been the first time they'd had sex in months, whereas three years ago when they first got married they couldn't keep their hands off each other, now it felt like they barely looked at each other. She got up to get dressed because she was needed at the palace, they were holding a press conference today and she was dreading it. Liam had gotten Olivia pregnant, after lots of arguing about how they were going to explain it, they settled on telling the press that she was a surrogate for them since Emma couldn't get pregnant. She hated that she had to tell the nation, but it was important, rumors had already infiltrated the court, she seemed to be at the center of them all. A loveless marriage with Liam, her relationship with Drake in a bad place as they watched Kiara throw herself at him more and more every council meeting, rumors that Emma didn't want children, people even beginning to wonder if Olivia was really a surrogate. In an effort to spend some more time with Drake and try to fix what was wrong with them, she brought him to the palace for the press conference.
“Are you going to be watching?” She asked as she changed into a little black dress. Drake shrugged.
“I don't like watching you play house with him Emma.” She sighed.
“I don't either, but I could use a friendly face in the crowd.”
“Yeah, I guess I'll watch then.”
“Thank you.” Emma found Liam and Olivia, all of them walking out together to face the press. Cameras flashed the instant they appeared, Emma plastered on a fake smile and stood on one side of Olivia, Liam on the other.
“Thank you all for coming! We have an announcement we would like to make. Before we do though, we ask that you be respectful, and we will be answering questions at a later date.”
“As you're all very aware, I haven't produced an heir yet. This has been a trying time for us, and we have discovered that I….” Emma took a deep breath to calm her nerves and searched for Drake in the crowd, locking eyes with him. “I cannot have children; Lady Olivia has been so generous as to be our surrogate.”
“I'm just so glad I was able to help my friends, and, no the baby won't come out with bright red hair, Emma is still the baby's mother!” Olivia joked, and Emma prayed she was right.
“Yes, we're so grateful to Lady Olivia for helping us, we can't wait to finally start our little family!” Liam placed a hand on Olivia's very pregnant belly and Emma did the same, her smile faltering as Drake walked out of the press conference. They said good-bye to the press and Emma chased after Drake. She found him in the secluded courtyard he had taken her to after he won his duel, that felt like so long ago now as she stepped up beside him, staring into the fountain.
“Drake.” He wouldn't look at her.
“Drake please!” he finally looked up at her and Emma didn't like what she was seeing. He was upset, she could see it in his eyes, he had never looked at her like that though, only Liam.
“Give up the charade.”
“What? I don’t know what you’re talking about Drake.”
“The marriage, your marriage to Liam! Ask him for a divorce, give up the charade Emma!” she looked down at her feet.
“You know I can’t Drake. It’s not a good time.” Drake scoffed and ran a hand through his hair.
“Really? Give me one good reason you can’t end it now! It’s been three years since Anton was defeated. Liam's secured the crown, the people love him, now he's even got an heir. Do you not want everyone to know about me? Are you ashamed because you've been queen for so long?” Emma took a step back reeling, she couldn't believe he had even implied that.
“How could you say that?! I love you Drake Walker and if I could tell the world that right now I would! I can't though, if Liam and I got divorced now, think of the consequences. It would ruin my reputation; the tabloids would never leave us alone.” Drake laughed incredulously.
“You think your reputation and Liam's won't be wrecked when that baby has bright red hair? Everyone already whispers about it at court anyways. The problem is you won't commit Barnes, you won't commit to being with me.” Emma reached out for him, but he pulled away and she flinched. He hadn't called her Barnes while they were alone for three years, it sounded foreign to her.
“I lay in bed next to you every night Drake! I wake up, happy to be by your side in our home. I've been trying for three years to give you the baby we want so desperately. Tell me that's not commitment!”
“We're still hiding behind closed doors and you haven't given me one good reason why. Oh, and while we're at it, all this talk about kids was great before we got married, but let's be real. Those kids would be raised as royalty and I'd never stand a chance, it was a great dream, but it can never happen, I'd never get to be their dad.” Emma was crying as she tried to grab Drake's hand.
“That's not true Drake! They would be my kids too and I'll be damned if Liam takes that from us after everything else. I want nothing more than to be with you and only you Drake, but Liam would never give me the divorce even if I asked. It's just not possible.” He shook his head and forced back the tears welling up in his eyes.
“Then maybe this isn't working anymore Barnes. I'm done. I'm tired of sharing my wife, it's all or nothing.”
“Drake please!” She begged stumbling towards him, but he turned and walked away so she couldn't see the tears streaming down his own face. Emma fell to her knees, she couldn't believe what had just happened.
“Fine! Why don't you go fuck Kiara then! Everyone knows she's obsessed with you!” It felt like a nightmare. Drake had just left, just walked away without turning back. She didn't want to believe they were over, but his words were so final. She decided that she'd sleep at the palace tonight and go back home in the morning to talk to him after they both had some time to calm down, she couldn't believe that he would just walk away like that.
Next Time: Drake left, will they be able to fix things or are they done for good? Will Drake find comfort with Kiara or will he fight for Emma? Will Emma finally ask Liam for a divorce?

Sojourn: Stand to the Right
Pairing: Liam x MC Rating/Warning: PG-13ish; Language, topic of death Summary: Katrina and Liam take a trip to her hometown for a bittersweet hello and goodbye Author’s Note: *All main characters belong to Pixelberry, I’m just borrowing them* This is part of Sojourn:Her, taking place between Books 2 and 3 of The Royal Romance, where Katrina opts to finish school before marrying King Liam. This is also for @meeraaverywalker November 13 Challenge: Meeting the Parents. Word Count: +/- 3000
“Are you sure about taking the subway? We can take the car into the city, you know I don’t mind driving,” Liam said, wrapping an oversized scarf around his neck.
Katrina smiled at him. “Trust me, you do not want to drive downtown on a weekend. Or a weekday. Ever, really.”
Liam’s face contorted into a confused expression. “Then why bother driving at all?”
“Not everyone lives that close to a Metro station, Love. Lots of people commute into the city from thirty, even forty miles out.” She stuffed her feet into a pair of knee high black leather boots and zipped them up before wrapping a scarf around her neck. “Don’t forget, when you get on an escalator – ANY escalator – stand to the right if you’re not going to walk up or down.”
“Um…okay,” he replied, slipping on a knit beanie over his hair.
“Trust me, I’ve yelled at schoolchildren for standing on the wrong side in the middle of rush hour.” Liam looked at her with wide eyes. “I’d do it again, no question!”
He chuckled as she pulled on her coat. “Is it bad that I kind of wish I could see that happen?”
“Trust me, if someone winds up on the wrong side of the escalator, I will be that girl,” she replied, grabbing her purse. “Let’s get going.” They left the hotel room and walked down the hall to the elevators, preparing to head downtown in Katrina’s home city to see the National Christmas Tree.
Liam had never been on the subway system in the District; any previous visits to the US capital included a security team and a motorcade. This trip was devoid of any pomp and circumstance; after the Thanksgiving debacle, Liam was glad to steal some time away with Katrina for a long weekend to visit her hometown. He figured it would be the perfect opportunity not only to see the trees all lit up, but he hoped the trip would also add a little closure to her life as well. She’d admitted that she hadn’t been “home” since she had to say goodbye to her younger sister years ago.
He followed Katrina into the station, watching her as she expertly navigated to a row of machines. He watched as she tapped a card to the machine and pressed some buttons before sliding a credit card in a slot, tapping the first card in the same spot. She handed him the card, then repeated the process with a second card. He flipped the piece of plastic over in his hand; on the front was an image of the former President Obama. “Trina?” he asked, holding up the card to her.
Katrina slipped her credit card back into her wallet and tilted her head, motioning for Liam to follow her. They walked on, and she tapped the card to the front of a turnstile before it opened for her, and she walked through. “Just tap it on that white circle,” she instructed. Liam did, and walked through after her. “SmarTrip card…you just add money to it as needed, for fares. Yours is a special Inauguration card I bought during Obama’s first term, it’s never been used.” Her eyes nervously darted behind him, noticing a large group of teenagers starting to move through the turnstiles. “Li, let’s GO, now,” she urged.
Liam turned his head and grinned. Perfect! “What’s the rush, lovely? The galleries aren’t going anywhere, neither is the tree,” he chuckled. He popped the lens off the camera hanging around his neck and snapped a photo as she glared at him. Katrina rolled her eyes and groaned as some of the teenagers made their way through and stepped onto the escalator heading down to the platforms, and he snapped a second photo.
“I hate you sometimes, I really do.” She glanced up at the sign displaying train arrivals, noticing that the train they needed was only two minutes away. As the sea of youths clad in matching red jackets continued, she grabbed Liam’s hand and pulled him to the escalators. As expected, the mass of red stood on both sides of the escalator in a haphazard pattern, blocking the long descent underground. Katrina felt her palms start to sweat and her heart raced; she didn’t really want to yell at the kids because they didn’t know any better, but standing on one of the longest escalators in the city was going to test her already dwindling patience. She took a deep breath and shouted at the top of her lungs. “STAND TO THE RIGHT! STAND TO THE RIGHT!”
Still holding Liam’s hand, she pushed past a young woman that made a face at her, and they started walking down as some of the students pushed together to get out of the way. Liam started laughing behind her as she gruffly tapped shoulders and pushed herself through people that didn’t heed her warning, and she yelled again. “MOVE TO THE FUCKING RIGHT IF YOU’RE GOING TO STAND. THIS ISN’T A GODDAMN RIDE AT DISNEYWORLD!”
“Lady, what the fuck is your problem?” One of the teenagers turned to look at her as she tried to nudge him to the empty space on to his right.
“It’s called being considerate, son,” she said, in her most authoritative voice. “You’re not the only ones using the Metro. People are trying to get to WORK.” Katrina raised her hand to motion behind her, lightly hitting Liam in the chest because he was standing right behind her. The young man peered behind them, noticing the line of men and women in suits and business attire. “Metro rule – stand. To. The. Right. Walk to the left. Remember that the rest of your trip.”
The other students within earshot squeezed over to the right side, and as she continued down the steps, several of them muttered “bitch” under their breath.
“Yeah, that’s right, I’m the bitch who didn’t bother to think about etiquette before taking a trip to a new city, YUP. TO THE RIGHT! TO THE RIGHT!” She continued down the escalator, hearing Liam’s deep chuckle behind her. Finally reaching the platform, she saw the train pulling into the station, and turned back to grab Liam’s hand again. “Let’s go before any of those kids start blocking the platform!”
Liam grabbed her hand and they jogged up to the edge of the platform, waiting for the train to stop. Once passengers left the car, the pair of them boarded and Katrina slid into one of the molded seats, taking deep breaths to calm herself. Liam took the seat next to her, draping his arm behind her shoulders as he kissed the side of her head. “That was kind of hot, watching you yell like that,” he whispered into her ear. “Commanding, calling out their lack of etiquette…” he nuzzled his nose against her temple. “I like bossy Trina.”
Katrina giggled, playfully swatting his knee. “Down boy,” she teased. “DC’s not as accepting of public indecency as Cordonia.” She turned to kiss him on the lips, feeling her tension from yelling melt away.
---
Liam and Katrina spent most of the morning walking through the Museum of Natural History downtown, along with the National Gallery of Art. She pointed out some of her favorite paintings, and they took their time walking hand in hand, or with his arm wrapped around her, like a normal couple. She couldn’t help stealing glances at him the whole time, enjoying the fact that he was dressed so casually.
Oftentimes Liam would have to wear a suit in Cordonia while dealing with meetings and public appearances. He’d look dashing in his formalwear for formal dinners and galas, very much the regal and dignified leader. However, there was an ease to seeing him dressed down; today he was in dark skinny jeans with a grey hoodie, and a heavy military jacket. With the aviator sunglasses and knit beanie on his head, he blended in with the crowd, any trace of a King removed, minus the quiet gracefulness he exuded while walking.
They were sitting on a bench on the National Mall, sipping on coffee, watching people walk past. The sun was still bright in the sky, but the late November air was crisp and chilly. Katrina leaned against Liam’s side as he absentmindedly rubbed her arm, and felt him kiss the top of her head. “Think it’s time to go?” She nodded silently. They got up to leave, tossing their empty cups in a trash can on the way to L’Enfant station, when Liam veered off in the direction of Virginia Avenue.
“Where are you going?” she asked, catching up with him.
“We should bring something with us,” he replied, offering his arm to her. She let her hand rest in the crook of his elbow as they walked down the street.
“And how is it that you know exactly where you’re going, in my city?”
Liam tapped his temple and smirked. “I did my homework, Love.” They stopped in front of a flower shop and Liam held the door open for her. Walking inside, Katrina admired the bouquets and arrangements that filled the shop, inhaling the scent of roses and lilies. Liam walked up to the counter and spoke quietly with a woman at the register, who disappeared into a back room. When she reappeared, she had two large shopping bags with boxes in them.
Katrina picked up a bouquet of crimson red roses and walked over to the counter. “What did you do?” she asked, narrowing her eyes at Liam.
“The roses as well,” he said to the woman behind the counter, handing her a credit card. “I requested a special order for us, I hope you don’t mind too much.” He signed the receipt and picked up the bags, placing the roses inside one, and they left the shop.
---
After another subway ride where Liam almost got one of the bags stuck between the automatic turnstiles, they exited Stadium-Armory station and flagged down a cab to reach their destination. Katrina fidgeted nervously in the seat, staring out the window and repeatedly wiped her hands against her jeans. Liam reached over and squeezed her hand even though she tried to pull away. His warm touch made her heart flutter and slow down at the same time. “How long has it been, Trina?” His voice was soft, nearly a whisper.
“Six, almost seven years,” she replied, still staring out the window. A lump was forming in her throat the closer they got to the address she’d given the cab driver. “I haven’t been here since I said goodbye to Jo.”
“We don’t have to do this if you don’t want to, Love,” he replied, squeezing her hand again. “If you’re not ready, we can go back to the hotel. Or leave altogether and go back to New York tonight.”
She chewed on her bottom lip before turning to look at him with a sad smile. “We’re here, you’re here with me, it’s time this happened.” The cab slowed to a stop, and they both reached into their pockets for a handful of bills, laughing at each other. “You get this ride, I’ll pay for the cab back,” she said, tucking the cash back into her coat pocket. She exited the cab as Liam paid the driver, carrying the bags with him. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath in front of the cemetery’s entrance. “Time for you to meet my Parents.”
They walked through the cemetery together, Liam a few paces behind Katrina as she tried to remember the way to the right plot. After a few minutes, she stopped walking and looked a few yards ahead at a large headstone next to a smaller single one. “We’re here,” she said quietly.
“You can go on your own first, if you want a moment,” Liam offered.
Katrina turned to face him, going in for a hug. He quickly moved the camera around his neck and held her in his arms. “Thank you,” she murmured against his chest. She inhaled the scent of his cologne and squeezed her arms around his strong back one more time before letting go.
He handed her the bouquet of roses and watched as she walked over to the headstones, pulling half the roses out and laid them on the ground. He saw her lips moving, but she was too far away to hear what she was saying, and he didn’t want to. She alternated between touching the front of the large headstone, occasionally glancing up at Liam and smiling, though tears streaked down her ivory cheeks, tinged pink by the Autumn air. He wanted nothing more than to go over to her and hold her tight to take away her sadness, but he stayed in place, waiting patiently for her signal. Liam took the cap off his camera and focused the lens on the beautiful woman in front of him, snapping photo after photo of her as she talked to her family. She took a few steps to the smaller headstone, crossing her legs on the ground, and laid the rest of the roses on the ground, save for one. As her lips moved, she slowly pulled the petals from the rose in her hand, sprinkling them across the top of the marble marker. He snapped more photos of her, rose petals dancing as they fell from her hand, her hair surrounding her like a lion’s mane. She was stronger than she ever believed she could be, and he wanted her to be reminded of that.
Katrina stood up, dusting off her pants, and looked over at Liam. He picked up the bags he’d set on the ground and walked over to her, hugging her once more. “Feeling okay?”
He felt her exhale against his chest. “Much better. I needed this.” She pulled away and gave him a curious look. “Do I get to find out what you ordered at the florist now?”
Liam smiled and set the bags down, opening up one of the boxes. He pulled out a small arrangement of foxgloves and camellia flowers, and Katrina gasped. “You sweet, perfect man, you didn’t,” she whispered. “For Gran and Grandpa?”
“Their favorites, right? That’s why they’re inked on you,” he said, placing the flowers on the left side of the headstone. He opened a second box, containing an arrangement of daises and gardenias, laying it on the right side of the headstone, where Katrina’s parents rested. Katrina stood on her toes to kiss his cheek. “Mr. Bailey, Mrs. Bailey, I’m so sorry that I never got a chance to meet you in person to tell you how wonderful your daughter is,” Liam began, looking at the names of Katrina’s parents etched in the marble. “She’s been the light of my life in the short time I’ve been graced to know her, and I hope to spend the rest of my life making her even half as happy as she’s made me. I know she misses you dearly, and you’re never far from her thoughts.” Liam paused to swallow, feeling his emotions form like a lump in his throat. “I…lost my mother when I was a young boy, so I’m familiar with the pain of losing someone you love.” Katrina wrapped her arm around his waist and leaned against him. “Mr. and Mrs. Bailey for your grandparents?”
“They’d probably insist you call them Gran and Grandpa.”
Liam chuckled lightly. “Gran and Grandpa,” he said, looking at the names etched on the left side of the headstone. “You’d be pleased to know that your granddaughter is an intelligent, spirited, kindhearted woman, and she’s pursuing her dream to study law. Her strength and determination amazes me constantly, and challenges me to be a better man and king. I could ask nothing less of a future queen, and there’s not a doubt in my mind that your granddaughter…” he paused to look at the other side of the headstone, “…and your daughter…will be the very thing that my home country needs, just as I need her in my life.”
Liam bent down to retrieve the last item in the bags, pulling out a delicate bouquet of bluebonnets and lavender roses. Katrina’s hand flew up to cover her mouth as she started crying again, and he placed the flowers in front of Josephine’s grave. “Trina tells me that these flowers are your favorites, Josephine.” He knelt down and touched the cold marble. “Trina misses you more than you could ever imagine. I wish I could have known you, she tells me that you were something special. I uh…” he cleared his throat, trying not to let his own emotions overwhelm him. “Look for my mother, Sophia…she also goes by Soon-Bok…she’ll help look after you too. Also Jo? I hope I have your blessing to keep using your nickname for Trina. I’ve grown rather fond of it, and your sister as well,” he said, smiling nervously at Katrina.
Katrina bent over and pressed her lips to Liam’s, cupping the sides of his face with her chilled hands. He shuddered slightly at her touch, but kissed her back, moving to hold her hands in his as he stood up. “I need to buy you gloves for Christmas,” he teased. “It’s only November and your hands are like icicles.”
Katrina stuck her tongue at him as she folded up the shopping bags. “Some of us aren’t human furnaces.”
Liam grinned and laced his fingers with hers, pulling her into another kiss. “I will gladly warm your cold, clammy hands any hour of any day, my Love. Salanghea.”
“I love you too,” she said, smiling. “Shall we go? Getting dark soon, they’ll be lighting the trees right about now.”
“Ready when you are.” They walked back along the paths to the entrance of the cemetery, this time requesting a Dryve from Katrina’s phone app. “So…” Liam started, rocking back on his heels on the sidewalk. “Do you think your parents liked me?”

“Being here for only an hour may give the wrong impression, that even you don’t think its safe to stay.”
“So you’re saying we have the rest of the day free?” Maxwell asked. Kina almost laughed at the sudden jubilant tone that the fun-loving lord tried and failed to keep hidden. Instead, she just nodded.
“Eyes are on all of you, but yes, you can do what you like with the day before we depart for Castelsarreillan tomorrow.”
Riley saluted Kina, and the rest attempted to keep their cool, but it was obvious they were happy by the sudden day off as everyone made the trek back to Applewood Manor. Amongst the trek back to the manor however, Riley was stopped by two children who were apparent fans of her, but it didn't take long for the group to see that the two young children had bigger problems that they were worried about.
Watching Riley's interaction and Maxwell's obvious empathy he felt for the two children, Kina was once again reminded that the two of them were a perfect match, a pair who were sure to earn the love of many in Cordonia with their kind and generous hearts.
"Why don't we open up the courtyard at the manor? That sounds a little more practical." Liam suggested when their friends attempted to figure out how the orchard can be used for a soccer game.
"We get to go to Applewood Manor?" young Jiro gasped, obviously a little awed by the idea.
"Yes we do!" Laughing, Riley took the lead and everyone entered the manor, and even Kina found herself smiling fondly at the awestruck expressions on both the children as they entered the finely pruned and kept gardens of the Applewood manor.
"So this is what it feels like to be royalty." Jiro murmured softly, his eyes wandering.
Camellia and Jiro sprinted to the courtyard the moment they saw it, and Kina found her eyes drifting to Liam, who waved his hands at a couple of staffers to bring out two goals, laughing as Jiro and Camellia eagerly started picking out their teams.
Automatically, Kina took a step back, intending to back off into her alotted room in the manor, when a hand caught her upper arm, and she looked up, her eyes widening in surprise when she saw Drake's dark eyes looking at her. He didn't smile, something Kina was beginning to realize was common with Drake Walker, but his eyes held a hint of mischief.
"Where do you think you're going?"
"Back to my room, Mr. Walker." Kina replied. "I don't see why-"
"Let's all be on a team together and be co-captains!” Riley claimed loud, grinning as she turned to her fiance. “And... Maxwell!"
"Yay we get both the Duke and Duchess of Valtoria!" Jiro jumped excitedly. Maxwell flushed, and quickly shook his head and reminding Jiro he was yet to be the duke, but easily slipped towards their side of the field.
"We're uneven. C'mon Miss Press Secretary, we're going to need one more to even up the score." Drake urged.
Hana and Riley nodded as they heard Drake's words. Kina bit her lip, uncertainty warring in her head, especially when her eyes fell on Liam's shuttered look, but Drake and the rest were not given her a chance to say no.The next thing she knew, she was in the middle of the field, as they called out strategies in front of the there, and Riley kicked off the game. Left with no choice, Kina did her best to keep up, dodging and dribbling as best as she could for someone who had little experience in team games.
It was more a game for fun then anything, laughter mingling with shouts as they played. Good natured bantering was passed between each other as they played, with Kina narrowly avoiding tripping herself and a few others along the way.As the game dragged on, Kina got more and more into the game, aggressively dodging and passing each time the ball came into her possession.
At some point, she faintly heard Drake and Hana cheering her on as she got the ball, but not noticing when their shouts turned to warnings, Kina was determined to get the ball into the goal she didn't even notice Maxwell standing in her way until she barreled into him.The force of running at full speed into a solid body knocked her backwards, the ball flying out of her possession as Kina fell and rolled, swallowing a gasp when she felt something go the wrong way.
When the momentum slowed down, Kina remained curled up on the field, the faint sound of her friends running up to her piercing through the haze of the sudden throbbing pain around her shoulder and her knee, that she hugged to her chest.
It wasn't till a soft hand turned her upwards, did she finally open her eyes, to be greeted with the face of a very worried-looking Liam, whose fingers were ghosting over every surface area he could see of the girl, assessing the extent of her injuries. In a corner, she could see Maxwell profusely apologizing, along with Riley and Hana's worried faces, but she barely noticed, her peripheral vision taken up by a fussing King.
The next thing she knew, Liam was hoisting her up in his arms, bridal style, clutching her tightly to his chest, continuously asking her if she was alright with each move, afraid to jostle something he wasn't sure was injured or not. Only managing a small nod when he asked if she was fine, Kina heard him asking Drake to run for the royal physician, before he began making his way back to the manor.
---
Liam could've sworn his heart had stopped when Kina had rolled back and remained in a fetal position from knocking full force into Maxwell. As someone who always got cut, scrapes and bruises from his various games he played with Drake and Maxwell as a boy, Liam knew the game would inevitably come with injuries, but Kina was someone who did not play them as she grew up, so she was probably alot more fragile versus the rest of them.
When Drake had dragged her in the game, Liam had been hesitant about joining. Things were still strained after their unfinished argument in the Portavira library the other day, and he wasn't even sure what direction he wanted to explore this attraction they had to each other, especially considering the girl herself was hesitant. Liam was reluctant to explore something that both parties were not invested in, yet when she took her tumble, Liam had been the first to run to her side, ignoring his expensive tailored suit as he skidded on the grass the last few feet to get to her side as fast as possible.
No doubt the suit would have to be replaced, but as he placed her gingerly down on the room the staff at Applewood had directed him to, Liam knew he wouldn't have done it any other way.
Leaning back after ensuring she was safely on the bed, his brows furrowed when he saw her still curled up, as if attempting to protect herself from more pain.
"Kina? Sweetheart, tell me what's wrong. I can't help you if you don't. Come on, turn over." Liam coaxed, his voice gentle as he turned her to the side she had fallen on.
Almost immediately, he could see why she was curled up in the way she was. Her right shoulder was already beginning to bruise, likely from the impact of falling, and her knee still remained in a curled position. She had gasped when he tried to straighten it, and Liam was unwilling to try again before the physician arrived.
"Does it hurt to move your shoulder?" he asked, holding her arm and gingerly moving it.
Kina shook her head, but her eyes were kept tightly squeezed shut. With a sigh of relief, he lay her arm down again, taking a seat by the side of her. "At least your arms fine, the doctor will be here to check on your knee. C'mon, here." Liam murmured, holding her neck up, he adjusted her so her head lay on his lap, just as the door opened to admit the physician, Drake trailing behind the doctor.
"Maxwell feels like crap, so he and Riley are sending Camellia and Jiro back."
Liam frowned, brushing his fingers against Kina's furrowed brow as the doctor got to work on her knee. She had tensed the moment he began bustling over her sore and bruised knees, and Liam felt extremely reluctant to leave her even if he knew his duties.
As they had played, he had seen a crowd gathering to watch their game, and the press probably had a million questions when they got an eyeful of him carrying Riley's press secretary off the field, but he didn't feel like dealing with them at this point.
"The orchard will probably closed as they regrow the trees." he muttered, rubbing his thumb soothingly hoping he could distract Kina from the pain as the doctor straightened her knee. He could hear the muffled squeak of pain she tried to keep quiet, and couldn't help but wonder how much more does the silly girl keep to herself.
"Drake, could you go be me for a bit?"
"What?" his best friend said, quite sure he had heard wrongly.
"Go to the crowd, tell them anyone who used to play in the orchard is welcome to play at Applewood Manor for the time being, until the orchard is tended to. Reassure them as well, that Lady Kina is safe and sound, and please invite them back when Applewood has been restored."
Drake frowned, but when Liam shot an imploring look at him, he sighed and nodded, exiting the room. As the door clicked to a shut, the doctor straightened up with a sigh and a worried look.
"What's the matter?" Liam immediately asked.
"I suspect the ACL is either overstretched or a partial tear, especially since Lady Makeena isn't someone used to exercise. Likely a grade 1 or 2 sprain." Stepping back, the aged doctor pulled out some bandages and an ointment, before bending and getting to work again. "This should reduce the swelling and hold the knee joints together as the muscles heals, but if it doesn't... well, people often opt for surgery as a way to fix this. But it's also treatable with physiotherapy."
"No knives." Kina muttered, and Liam looked down with surprise to find her eyes opened, albeit scared and watery. His heart clenched at her determined look, and looked to the doctor.
"What exercises does she have to do?"
---
After the doctor had left after bandaging her knee and leaving the ointment, Kina had eventually decided to sit up, watching as Liam finished up typing the instructions for the physiotherapy exercises the physician had recommended into his phone, talking to her as he typed.
"Twice a day, alright? He said you should be able to walk fine, just don't put too much pressure on it. Do you want a walking stick? We should probably get you one, and -"
"Thank you, You- Liam." Kina cut in, her voice soft but audible to Liam, who paused in surprise.Watching her hesitant look, the way she averted her eyes from him, Liam sighed and put his phone away, before going to take a seat next to her again. She tensed up as he did so, but this time, Liam bit the bullet and took a hand in his, squeezing it tightly.
"Last I checked, I had no checklist to fill out the moment I was born, Kina." his voice was soft as he spoke, rubbing circles on the back of her hand. "I am a King to everyone else, my greatest ambition is to be the leader everyone needs for this small country. But... I am not born purely to marry that perfect woman who will be the Queen, Kina. My bride of choice was Riley, a New York girl who didn't even know Cordonia existed." he wryly laughed, and Kina chuckled along with him.
"But my point here is this: When I speak to you like this, I do not see you as Riley's press secretary, nor do I view you as Madeleine's younger sister. You are Lady Makeena of Fydelia, a girl who puts her 101% into everything she does, who strives to keep her family together even if they do not do the same for her, the one who sees the good in everyone. I... I really want to get to know her more. If she'd let me. And I hope she'd get to know me too. Not as King Liam, not as Crown Prince Liam, but as regular Liam Rys."
Every word made Kina's heart swell, and by his last few words, Kina bit her lips in her efforts to stop the emotion she felt welling up in her throat, unable to answer without sobbing, she conceded with a nod and a smile, laughing when Liam grinned giddily just as someone knocked on the door.
"Kina?" Riley and Hana's head popped in just as Liam released her hand and jumped up from the bed. Luckily for them, neither girl saw them, and they simply focused on Kina.
"Are you feeling better?"
"Much. Although this knee is going to need some time, apparently." Kina replied wryly, grinning.
"Aw man!" Maxwell popped up, looking apologetic. "We thought we wanted to bring you to that spa that we visited the last time during... well, yeah, its awesome!"
"It's alright, I'll pass this time. Promise me you'll bring me back next time?" she cheekily challenged.
"Of course!" Maxwell exclaimed excitedly, before waving a hand at Liam.
"C'mon, let's go!"
"I..." he paused, hesitating as he glanced over at Kina, who shyly averted her eyes and grew a sudden interest in the sheets. Liam hid a laugh, reading Kina too well. "You know what guys, I think I'll stay in for the night. We've got a long ride to Kiara's duchy tomorrow."
Surprise was reflected in everyone's eyes as they blinked, but Drake appeared just at the right time, grinning. "Well are we going or what?"
"It's just... Well, Liam says he's staying in?" Maxwell murmured, confused.
Drake looked over, and grinned when Liam nodded at him, before starting to herd the rest of them. "Ah well let him do what he wants, he's the bloody King anymore. We, have got a spa reservation waiting for us guys, c'mon!"
As the door closed, Kina raised a skeptical eyebrow at Liam, having caught the look which passed between the two. The King flashed her an innocently questioning look. "What?"
"You and Drake have a lot of explaining to do."

Queen of Hearts (Ch. 23)
Drake x MC (Emma Barnes)
TRR AU: What would happen if Emma loved Drake but had to marry Liam?
Catch up here
Warnings: NSFW, cursing, angst(ish)
Note: Enjoy. Here’s the thing you dared me to add @ooo-barff-ooo . For other song in this chapter, check out: Andante, Andante by ABBA
Word Count:
Summary: Emma and Liam have a joined bachelor/bachlorette party in Vegas, but something wicked this way comes for Drake and Emma. They just can’t seem to catch a break.
Chapter 23: Sugar We’re Goin Down - Fall Out Boy
We’re going down, down in an earlier round And Sugar, we're going down swinging I’ll be your number one with a bullet A loaded God complex, cock it and pull it
Is this more than you bargained for yet? Oh, don't mind me, I'm watching you two from the closet Wishing to be the friction in your jeans Isn’t it messed up how I’m just dying to be him?
The only details that Maxwell would reveal about the party before they arrived in Vegas was that it was a joint bachelor/bachelorette party. They checked in, changed so that everyone was wearing dark colors except for Emma who wore a short gold dress that clung to her curves, and were whisked away to a nightclub, the first stop of the night. No one seemed to notice the man in a brown leather jacket and jeans following them, except for Liam. At the nightclub, a magician performed, seemingly throwing a knife at Emma who was tied up, before then calling Olivia up onto the stage to demonstrate his “control” over a tiger. The next thing on Maxwell’s agenda was a scavenger hunt for 3 of the crown jewels which he had apparently “borrowed” from the palace without anyone knowing, Emma was really beginning to question how good the security was. Emma was on a team with Liam, Drake and Hana. The other team captain was Olivia who teamed up with Bertrand, Penelope, and Kiara. Maxwell waited at the meeting point for both teams to return before giving them the next clues. Once the scavenger hunt was over, they returned to the hotel bar where Drake pulled her back.
“You’re not drinking?” Emma was surprised as everyone else had made a beeline for the bar.
“Actually, there was something I wanted to do, just the two of us...if you’re up for it.” There was a small smile on Drake’s face, she knew it had to be something good.
“You know that I’d sneak away with you for anything over these crowds any day.” Drake gently tugged her hand pulling her back onto the strip. The man from before always making sure he had them in his sight. They wandered hand in hand until they reached the base of the mini Statue of Liberty.
“Feel right at home?” Drake asked as Emma looked it up and down.
“New York hasn’t been my home for a long time Drake, I already told you, my home is wherever you are.” Drake chuckled.
“My world hasn’t been the same since the night we met Emma. I still remember the first thing I said to you.”
“Forget the table. Just bring us whiskey and lots of it.” Emma finished for him.
“I’m impressed you remember.”
“I’m impressed you remember. I don’t want to dwell on New York though, we only have one good memory there, what’s next?” Drake wasn’t going to argue, the one good memory they had from New York was just a fleeting moment. Hand in hand they rode an elevator down to an underground room resembling Venice, the ceiling was painted to look like a sunset, even the gondolas were in a real canal. Drake stepped into one and held his hand out to help Emma in. The gondolier took off down the canal and Emma snuggled up against Drake.
“I never properly thanked you for helping me clear my name, tracking down that photographer in Italy.” Drake shrugged.
“You shouldn’t be thanking me Barnes because your name got cleared you’re going to be queen.”
“But I got to stay at court because we cleared my name. So, shut up and let’s do Italy right this time.” Drake chuckled and wrapped an arm around Emma until the gondolier stopped beside the sidewalk.
“Guess the ride’s over. Don’t worry, I’ve got another stop in mind though.” Drake helped Emma out and took her to their last stop, the Eiffel tower.
“Paris, we found your sister while we were there.” Drake smiled.
“Yeah, all because of you. Now I’ve got my sister and a nephew. My family’s grown because of you Barnes.” Drake leaned against the railing, sighing.
“What?”
“I just wish that you could be a part of that family, you and Liam are gonna be married soon, I’ll just be the other man.”
“You’ll be the only man Drake. Think of this as our own private engagement tour, for us.” Drake grabbed Emma’s hips and pulled her body flush against his, she looked up at his lips, licking her own.
“You should kiss me now.”
“You think I’m going to kiss you every time you say something sweet?” He teased. “Because you’d be right.” Drake’s lips met hers in a heated kiss, his hands squeezing her butt. He began to kiss down her neck, his hands wandering over every sensitive spot on her body.
“Drake!” Emma gasped. She was dripping wet, Drake silenced her with a kiss before both their phones began to ring, breaking them apart. Their friends were beginning to wonder where they’d gone. It was time to head back and Emma was more than a little disappointed. They got back to the bar and Emma sidled up next to Liam who discreetly tucked his phone back into his pocket.
“Lady Emma, I’m glad you’ve decided to grace us with your presence at our party. Lady Kiara retired after she couldn’t find Drake, and Penelope shortly after that.” She gave Liam an apologetic smile.
“I know things haven’t at all worked out the way you thought they would, or intended, and that we’ve had a tough time figuring this out, but I do care about you Liam. None of this has been easy for me either and I hope you know that Drake cares about you too and that you guys are able to work through this.”
“I know Lady Emma, none of this has been easy.”
“Someday you’re going to find the one that makes you realize I was never the one for you anyways, we’re too volatile Liam.”
“I think I’m starting to see it, but I’m going to take it slower this time.” He smiled before looking down the bar at Olivia who was out of earshot. Emma gently squeezed his shoulder and wandered back over to Drake.
“Before we turn into the night, is there anything left you want to do?” Emma grinned wickedly and nodded, running off to the bartender, handing him a $20. She whispered something in his ear and she pulled Drake back over to the bar, shoving him onto a chair. Drake had missed the sign that said Tuesday nights were karaoke night, even though it wasn’t Tuesday, for $20 the bartender was willing to help Emma out.
“This is for someone very special to me.” Emma purred into the microphone grabbing everyone’s attention in the bar as she climbed up onto the other end. Drake’s eyes widened in shock, mortified as music began playing. Everyone was a bit worried that Emma was about to embarrass herself, except for Maxwell.
“YES EMMA!” He cheered her on as she began singing.
“Take it easy with me, please. Touch me gently like a summer evening breeze.Take your time, make it slow. Andante, Andante. Just let the feeling grow.” Her voice was soft and melodic as she locked eyes with Drake from across the bar, slowly walking towards him. He loved watching her up there, teasing him, but he didn't like all eyes on him as she got closer.
“Make your fingers soft and light. Let your body be the velvet of the night. Touch my soul, you know how. Andante, Andante. Go slowly with me now.” She ran her hands over her curves before kneeling down in front of Drake on the bar, the whole crowd cheering her on as she leaned in close, brushing their lips together before pulling away. Drake shifted uncomfortably in his chair, trying to hide his growing bulge from the crowd watching them.
“I'm your music (I am your music and I am your song). I'm your song (I am your music and I am your song). Play me time and time again and make me strong (Play me again 'cause you're making me strong). Make me scream, make me sound (You make me sing and you make me).” She winked as she changed the lyrics, the whole bar whooping and cheering for them now.
“Andante Andante. Tread lightly on my ground. Andante, Andante. Oh, please don't let me down.” She finished crawling into his lap, never breaking his gaze. It was as if the rest of the bar had disappeared. Everyone cheered them, too busy to notice as Liam slammed his drink back, leaving the empty glass on the bar, Olivia chasing after him.
“Where the hell did that come from Barnes?”
“I think the better question is why you haven’t taken me back to your room yet for one last fling before I’m a married woman.” Without hesitation Drake scooped Emma up and went straight for the elevator, the crowd still whooping and cheering behind them. Emma fumbled around in Drake’s pocket for his room key, and he hastily stumbled inside. Drake dropped Emma on the bed and began tearing at her dress, but she stopped him, gently putting a hand against his chest to stop him.
“What is it Barnes?”
“Didn’t you hear the song?” Drake nodded.
“Why do you think I was in such a hurry to get you up here?” Emma rolled her eyes.
“Take your time, make it slow. Make your fingers soft and light, let your body be the velvet of the night.” She grabbed Drake’s hand, gently guiding it, moving her hair to the side before slowly pulling her dress down. Drake got the point, he kissed slowly, his fingertips just brushing her skin as he pulled down her underwear. Emma shivered at his touch before slowly undressing him and guiding him back to the bed, where he laid on top of her. He took his time, kissing, sucking, teasing every sensitive spot, she gripped the sheets underneath them, reveling in the way his tongue felt on every part of her body.
“I want you so badly Barnes.” He whispered against her ear, his hard cock teasing her entrance.
“Good, because I can’t wait any longer.” Drake rocked slowly, and Emma gasped as he filled her completely, moving all the way in and out with every thrust.
“What was that line? Make me scream, make me sound? I’m going to make love to you all night as you scream my name Emma Barnes.” He rocked faster, thrusting with more force. Emma could feel herself coming undone.
“Oh my god. Drake.”
“Louder Barnes.”
“DRAKE!” she screamed as her first orgasm hit. Drake kept up his pace, finding his own release as Emma’s second orgasm washed over her.
“YES DRAKE!”
“Barnes!” Both were breathing heavy, but Drake rolled off grinning. “I’m not done with you yet.” he began kissing down her breasts, her stomach, his hand trailing over her skin where his lips had been moments before. She was already wet with anticipation as Drake’s tongue slipped between her legs, teasing her lips, her clit, before he slipped two fingers in her, pumping. She tangled her hands in his hair, he moaned against her, Emma’s coil wound tight once more.
“Cum for me Barnes and scream my name, I want to taste you while everyone knows your mine.” He removed his fingers and stuck his tongue in her.
“YES DRAKE! OH MY GOD DRAKE!” Emma’s third and most intense orgasm washed over her in waves of pleasure, and by the time it was over, she was completely spent. She didn’t care who heard them, what they thought, and she didn’t care who found them together the next morning. She wasn’t going to leave him after a night like that, besides, she wasn’t sure her legs would work anyways. Drake laid beside her on his back, his arm out. Emma scooted up and laid on her side, curled up against Drake, he pulled her close, their faces just inches from each other. She flung her leg over his. Emma was fighting sleep as Drake kissed her nose gently.
“That was one hell of a last fling Walker.”
“You inspired me.” Emma smiled and closed her eyes. “I love you Em.” He whispered, but she was already asleep.
Liam was up before Olivia the next morning, leaving her in bed while he slipped downstairs into the lobby. The man from yesterday was waiting for him, large manilla envelope in hand.
“This is what you wanted.” Damien handed the envelope over, feeling his stomach churn. He had followed the couple all day yesterday since they arrived in Vegas, he was usually happy to bust cheating spouses, but this was different. It didn't take him long to put the pieces together after hearing their conversations, they were in love, but she was being forced to marry the king. Their relationship was forbidden, he was a commoner. It didn't feel right following them, intruding on their private stolen moments, the only way he could justify it was by telling himself they should have been more careful in public. Not flaunting their relationship in front of the king, but the king already had a mistress. It didn't feel fair to Damien, but this was a job and he couldn't let his personal feelings get in the way.
“Thank you, Mr. Nazario. I know she doesn't love me, but I can't have them ruining this by parading around in public.” Damien nodded and left silently, desperate to be back in New York.
Early that morning there was an urgent pounding on the door. Emma groggily rolled out of bed and tossed Drake’s shirt on answering it to find Liam, Maxwell and Hana on the other side. None of them seemed surprised to see her, Liam the only one scowling at her attire. She had guessed they’d already stopped by her room.
“A little early for a wakeup call isn’t it?” Liam cleared his throat uncomfortably.
“We need to get back to Cordonia ASAP!” Maxwell, always high energy panicked Emma, she thought something else had happened.
“We have wedding details to finalize.” Hana gave her a small smile as Drake stirred behind them.
“Barnes? Who is it?” He rubbed his eyes and when he realized who it was, quickly checked to make sure he was covered by the sheets.
“Oh...uh...um.”
“We all heard you last night, no need to be shy.” Liam quipped, both of them felt the color rise to their cheeks.
“I just hope that Lady Emma didn’t wake Kiara or Penelope last night on the floor below, she was screaming a different man’s name after all.” Olivia appeared in the doorway smirking.
“Perhaps they heard you and Liam instead.” Emma raised her eyebrow, she wasn’t sure, but based on the way color rose to Liam’s cheeks and Olivia’s facade wavered, she would venture to guess she was right.
“Anyways,” Maxwell tried to ease some of the tension, we’ll see you two in the lobby in a bit!” he slammed the door shut behind them all.
“Damn Barnes.” Drake chuckled. Emma climbed onto the bed and planted a soft kiss on his lips.
“I'm tired of people trying to make us feel bad for being in love. Maybe it's time they got a taste of their own medicine.”
“I think it worked. I also think it was sexy.” Drake pulled her down and hovered over her as he kissed her. Emma giggled and forced her way off the bed.
“We'll have to pick that up later, right now we can't miss our flight, Liam might actually kiss us then.”
“Alright Barnes.” Drake sighed and climbed out of bed.
They only had about an hour of downtime before Madeleine had something scheduled for the wedding party. Liam called Drake and Emma into his study, and an uneasy feeling grew in the pit of their stomachs. It only got worse once they actually stepped inside, the lights dimmed, Liam leaned back in his chair, the only sound ice hitting his glass as the swirled the whiskey.
“What’s going on Liam?” he still didn't say a word, leaning forward in his chair he slid a photo forward with a single finger, multiple lined up neatly on his desk. Drake and Emma came over to look.
What's this?” His voice had an unnerving level of cool calmness to it, his fingers drummed on the desk, almost drowning out the sound of Emma and Drake's racing hearts. He was waiting for them to try and talk their way out of this, to try and lie to him again, this time he had proof. He was ready for them.
“It looks like me spending some alone time at my bachelorette party with the man I love.” Emma shoved the photo back at him, searching for Liam's eyes in the darkness. It was only seconds, but the only noise in the room was the thumping of their hearts and it was deafening.
Ba dum. Ba dum. Ba dum. Ba dum.
“I've told you so many times you must be careful. You promise to be and every time it fails. Now look at what you've done! Could you imagine if the press got their hands on these?” Emma grabbed the other pictures of her and Drake from the night before, these weren't paparazzi photos. These were far too close, Drake and Emma would've noticed paparazzi following them, that left only one explanation.
BA DUM. BA DUM. BA DUM. BA DUM.
“I can't believe you! You had someone follow us? This was supposed to be my bachelorette party! You couldn't let me enjoy one weekend!”
“No, because you need to understand the consequences of your actions! You are going to be royalty as of tomorrow. A scandal like this would ruin us.”
BA DUM BA DUM. BA DUM BA DUM. BA DUM BA DUM.
Emma thought her heart was going to beat right out of her chest, she'd never been so angry with someone.
“I don't want it Liam. I never wanted it! Take the duchy, take the ring! Take it all, I don't care anymore!”
“Well, you don't have a choice Emma! We will be married and that's the end of this discussion.” Liam slammed his tumbler back down onto the desk, Drake and Emma flinching as he stormed out of the room. The moment he was gone, Emma latched onto Drake shaking, Liam was a monster, out of control. He comforted her until they ran out of time, Madeleine summoning them with threats.

This was absolutely wonderful @zaffrenotes ,my goodness lady, what a ride through ALL of the emotions. I laughed and smiled and cried and sighed and oh em gee I felt the love between these two so strongly through all of it. Love in the fun times is good but love in the sad times is exceptional.
Gosh I just want to hug them both- Trina for all of the loss she’s faced and yet can still find the strength to stand tall. Liam for the sweet and perfect way that he showed his support, for the sadness he feels over not getting to meet his beloved’s family.
Ugh girl I’m so deep in my feels right now. This was beautiful amazing everything.

You've got me hooked with the light-hearted beginning (how I sympathize with Katrina and her yelling at the escalator offenders!), and I was expecting the meeting with her parents to be just the same... But nooooo
